Formed in June 1990, the Orange County Space Society is one of the largest and most successful chapters of the National Space Society.

Headquartered in Irvine, California, OCSS takes great pride in its ability to educate the general public on the topics of space exploration, manned spaceflight, and general science through our public programming.

OCSS’ membership stretches over 18 states and even overseas (Germany, Sweden and Turkey). Teachers, police officers, artists, journalists, and even astronauts are members of OCSS and continue to benefit the organization through volunteer and financial support.

A perennial NSS award winner, including the 2003 and 2004 Chapter of the Year award, OCSS moved from its meager beginnings in the back of a restaurant, to a large college classroom, to the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California. Now, we meet at the beautiful Heritage Park Library in Irvine, California.

The Orange County Space Society meets the third Sunday of each month at the Heritage Park Library in Irvine, California. Our meetings start at 3 p.m., last approximately one and a half hours, and are held in the library's meeting room. The general public is more than welcome to attend. Afterward, many members in attendance get together locally for dinner and usually a lively discussion about chapter activities and the space program in general. OCSS has held our meetings at Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California, for more than seven years, and we greatly value the successful relationship we built with that excellent science center. We look forward to bringing a rebirth to our excellent public programming to the library.

OCSS has begun a wonderful partnership with the Tessmann Planetarium, on the campus of Santa Ana College in Santa Ana, California. The Planetarium is in the process of expanding its facilities, including a new lobby, an upgraded star machine, improved audio and video displays, and soon, a new classroom where visitors and students alike can delve into the wonders and mysteries of the universe using the latest information and teaching techniques. OCSS has loaned the planetarium our 20-foot display walls and our beautiful display case to help beautify the main lobby. The walls contain photos detailing space history and its future, and the display case contains a great collection of models and other display materials from our collection.
